Brabantio charges Othello with the kidnapping of Desdemona through the use of charms, drugs, and even witchcraft. This is made more relevant due to the fact that Africans are stereotyped as purveyors of black arts or paganism.
HOW DO THE MILITARY COUNCIL'S WORKINGS PARALLEL THE EARLIER BATTLE BETWEEN OTHELLO AND BRABANTIO?
Brabantio charges Othello with the kidnapping of Desdemona through the use of charms, drugs, and even witchcraft. This is made more relevant due to the fact that Africans are stereotyped as purveyors of black arts or paganism. HOW ARE THE MILITARY COUCIL'S WORKINGS DIFFERENT FROM THE EARLIER BATTLE BETWEEN OTHELLO AND BRABANTIO? The council’s workings and arrangements parallel the earlier battle between Othello and Brabantio because, once again, upon Desdemona’s admittance to her marrying Othello willingly and announcing that she will be traveling abroad with her husband and the troops, Othello is accused of using magic and complaining that nature has made some mistake to make his daughter want to be with her husband. WHAT DOES BRABANTIO CHARGE OTHELLO WITH?
Brabantio charges Othello with the kidnapping of Desdemona through the use of charms, drugs, and even witchcraft. This is made more relevant due to the fact that Africans are stereotyped as purveyors of black arts or paganism. WHY DOES OTHELLO ESCAPE TROUBLE WITH BRABANTIO?
Othello escapes trouble with Brabantio because Desdemona does in fact love Othello and admits proudly to marrying him. |
WHAT TECHNIQUES OF MANIPULATION DOES IAGO USE ON OTHELLO?
Iago manipulates Othello by acting based on Othello’s body language and personal decisions. Iago puts on this happy-go-lucky facade to appear loyal to his dear friend and puts on a fairly good show of respecting his general. Iago also reassures him about his wedding to Desdemona and ensures him that is reputation won’t be diminished because of it. EFFECTS Othello still has trust in Iago, even more so now that he is wedded, he has a lieutenant, and his closest friend is supportive of him. This helps when looking forward in the play because Othello begins to rely on Iago to tell him about any news on current affairs, battle and Cassio related. Iago has embedded his trust into Othello. Iago’s reference to Janus is relevant because Janus, a two-faced Roman deity, fits Iago’s manipulative and vindictive nature perfectly.
HOW DOES OTHELLO DEFEND HIMSELF FROM BRABANTIO'S ALLEGATIONS?
Othello defends himself from Brabantio allegations by admitting that he has in fact married Desdemona and that everything he has said has been true. He also says that if Desdemona claims false to running away with him, he would gladly be imprisoned and killed, however, if she admits to running away with him and loves him, than that will be so. |
IN MY OWN WORDS, I THINK IAGO'S EXPLANATION OF LOVE IN HIS SOLILOQUY IS:
Iago is claiming love to be short and temporary, much like lust. Lust is temporary and almost frivolous in the scheme of things because you can lust over even the lowest of women, prostitutes, but know that you will never be committed to them for a lifetime, or any length of time at that. |
